HSS Sections

Hollow Structural Sections (HSS)—including Circular (CHS), Square (SHS), and Rectangular (RHS) profiles—are widely recognized for their structural efficiency and architectural appeal. At FGA, we manufacture both cold-formed HSS with ERW technology and seamless hollow structural sections, offering solutions tailored to various engineering and industrial applications. These profiles combine a high strength-to-weight ratio with clean geometry, making them ideal for modern construction, infrastructure, and precision fabrication.

Standard HSS types

hollow steel sections (HSS) are classified into three main types in terms of appearance:

  • CHS (Circular Hollow Section) or steel pipes that are used in water and power, oil and gas and petrochemical industries, as well as steel structures such as the metal framework of buildings, bridge construction, sports stadiums, etc.
  • SHS (Square Hollow Section) or square steel (metal) tubes which are used in the metal frame of the building, machine chassis, metal columns, etc.
  • RHS (Rectangular Hollow Section) or rectangular steel (metal) tubes that are similar to square steel sections, are used in the metal framework of buildings, shed construction, bridges, machine chassis, metal columns, etc.

Production Methods

HSS sections are produced in different ways, some of them are mentioned below:

  • Traditional method:

produced by welding steel sheets to each other, and although they do not make much difference in appearance, the welding process and the low quality of their construction greatly affect the final quality of the products. The amount of damage caused by welding is significantly higher and the construction speed is much lower.

  • Cold Formed Method:

Steel sheets are slowly bent and formed by rollers in different stages. Then, when the two ends of the sheet are close, they are welded to each other. This welding may be done by Electrical Resistance Welding (ERW) or Submerged Arc Welding (SAW). The advantage of this production method is in various lengths and dimensions.

  • Hot Formed Method:

The production process in this method requires changing the shape of the metal at higher temperatures, and for this reason, the production sections usually have greater strength and better mechanical properties.

  • Seamless production:

It is done by emptying (perforating) the steel billet by sandblasting method. The main advantage of this method is the strength and resistance it creates.

FGA Steel Company produces all kinds of HSS steel pipes and sections using the most advanced machines in the world by cold forming method with ERW (electric resistance welding) in different dimensions and thicknesses. The steel used in production is mild (ST37) or high-strength (ST52).

Advantages and applications of HSS

Hollow structural steel (HSS) sections have various advantages in industrial and building construction. The geometric shape of these sections has caused them to be used in metal structures, and the proper use of these sections leads to the construction of more affordable, stronger, and lighter structures that have better speed and quality than other sections. The modern production method of HSS sections in accordance with world standards, provides a beautiful appearance and a safe structure.

HSS steel sections are widely used in the metal structures of buildings, bridges, stadiums, airports, refineries, smart parking lots, amusement parks, water transmission, oil and gas, machine chassis, and many other industries.
