Use of hollow sections in ancient Iran

  • Inspired by nature, engineers realized the desirable properties of hollow shapes and tried to make the best use of these properties even in primitive structures.
  • There are incredible signs that indicate the use of hollow sections in the early civilization of ancient Iran.
  • In the picture, you can see the photos taken by FGA Company from the Louvre Museum in Paris in April 2016.

Since the beginning of the 19th century, HSS has been used in many large and beautiful structures. Although due to the lack of today’s technology, their use is mostly limited for the cost-effective production of these sections, but the structural engineers have always tried to take advantage of this Sections, because these sections are the most suitable option for building lightweight and safe structures due to their mechanical properties.

The Arched Bridge, built in Scotland (1821 with a free span length of 521 meters) as you can see in the pictures, is one of the first large and famous structures using HSS production with riveted connections in the main bearing system.
